Project background:

At the end of the assembly line in the automobile factory, different models of bumpers need to be 

inspected for defects. At present, enterprises mainly use manual inspection of bumper surface defects. 

However, with the acceleration of the production pace, personnel are easily fatigued and bored when 

facing high-intensity and repetitive labor, which leads to low work efficiency; at the same time, the 

increase in labor costs, 24-hour production in day and night shifts, information docking of different 

batches, system data synchronization and other aspects are becoming more and more complicated, and 

the cost of rework due to human negligence is getting higher and higher. These problems also restrict the 

further development of enterprises, and intelligent, automated, and data-based transformation and 

upgrading are effective ways to solve this problem.

Project process:

1. The front end informs the color and model of the incoming bumper;

2. The robot records the teaching detection points to the 3D vision end;

3. When the bumper is directly below the camera, the robot triggers the camera to take a photo, and the 

3D vision end sends the positioning coordinates to the manipulator, and the manipulator walks to the 

detection point with the 2D camera;


Technical analysis:

1. The 3D vision end uses template matching to recalculate the template teaching points made during 

teaching into new coordinates to guide the 2D camera to detect defects on the bumper.

2. The robot base has an additional axis, which adds a certain degree of difficulty to the project. The 3D 

vision end effectively solves the additional axis problem through algorithms.

3. A bumper has 40-50 detection points and an accuracy requirement of ±0.5mm. The 3D vision end uses 

a reasonable algorithm to achieve a partial shot of the bumper to meet customer needs.
